Provenance

Where it came from

Carrier Thrall was released in 2015 as part of the Battle for Zendikar set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set returned players to the plane of Zendikar, depicting a desperate struggle between the local inhabitants and the reality-warping Eldrazi titans. As an uncommon creature, the card was designed to support the set's mechanical focus on Eldrazi Scions, which could be sacrificed for mana, reflecting the parasitic and consuming nature of the Eldrazi influence on the world.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Lius Lasahido, who sought to capture the unsettling, ethereal physiology of the Eldrazi. Lasahido focused on the creature's alien anatomy and the eerie, desolate landscape of Zendikar to reinforce the theme of environmental corruption. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its utility in limited formats, effectively serving as a functional piece that balanced aggressive stats with the set's specific mana-acceleration mechanics.
