Where it came from
Casal, Lurkwood Pathfinder // Casal, Pathbreaker Owlbear was released as part of the Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves drop in 2023. This limited-run collection was designed to celebrate the theatrical release of the film, reimagining key characters and creatures through the specific illustrative lens of Magic: The Gathering. The cards bridge the gap between traditional tabletop RPG aesthetics and the expressive, stylized art direction often found in specialized Secret Lair releases.
The art for this double-faced card captures the transformation mechanic central to the character's role in the film's narrative. By utilizing a dual-sided frame, the design team emphasized the versatility of the creature, moving from a scout-like human form to the hulking, predatory owlbear. The reception within the community was largely focused on the utility of the card's mechanics for commander players and the appeal of the film-inspired artwork for fans of the Dungeons & Dragons brand.
