Provenance

Where it came from

The Catacomb Dragon was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to introduce a more exotic, desert-themed aesthetic to the game, moving away from the high-fantasy tropes of its predecessors. The set is notable for being the first to introduce mechanics like phasing and for its emphasis on the color purple as a recurring thematic element within the artwork.

The card illustration was created by artist Brian Snoddy, who was a frequent contributor to the game during the mid-nineties. His depiction of the creature reflects the grounded, illustrative style common to early Magic sets, emphasizing organic texture and a menacing posture. Upon release, the card was received as a standard creature within the dragon archetype, praised by players for its specific interactions within the graveyard-manipulation strategies that defined the Mirage environment.
