Where it came from
Afterlife was released in October 1996 as the opening card of the Mirage expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a set designed to evoke a North African and Middle Eastern aesthetic, Mirage introduced new mechanical keywords such as phasing and flanking, marking a shift toward more strategic, permanent-focused gameplay. The card itself, a white instant spell that exiles a creature and grants its controller a spirit token, became a staple for its efficient removal capabilities in a format shifting toward high-value creatures.
The artwork for Afterlife was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prolific artist known for his distinct, expressive linework and mythological themes. Hoover aimed to capture the ethereal, transformative nature of the afterlife through a soft, radiant visual style that contrasted with the grittier aesthetics found in some earlier Magic sets. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players as a flexible utility tool, earning its place in competitive white-based control decks for many years.
