Where it came from
Cathars' Crusade was first introduced in the Avacyn Restored expansion in 2012, designed to capture the flavor of the battle against the forces of darkness on the plane of Innistrad. The card represents the rally of the human cathars, an organized religious military force, whose conviction grows stronger as their ranks swell. It was designed as an enchantment that mechanically incentivizes creature-heavy strategies, rewarding players for flooding the board with allies.
The Commander 2016 iteration, featuring the card with collector number 61, brought this popular enchantment into a preconstructed deck environment, making it more accessible to players of the Commander format. The illustration by Greg Staples depicts the dramatic, gothic aesthetic synonymous with the Innistrad setting, utilizing high-contrast lighting to emphasize the fervor of the crusading soldiers. The card has been widely received as a staple in white-aligned token decks, valued for its ability to quickly scale power in a multiplayer setting.
