Where it came from
Bonehoard was first released in the Mirrodin Besieged expansion in 2011, later appearing in the Commander 2016 set as part of the Entropic Uprising deck. The card is a piece of Equipment that embodies the parasitic and scavenging nature of the Phyrexians, specifically their ability to repurpose the discarded remains of the living to augment their mechanical creations. Mechanically, it reflects the Living Weapon keyword introduced in the Scars of Mirrodin block, which allows an Equipment card to enter the battlefield attached to a 0/0 Germ creature token, ensuring the card is immediately functional.
The card’s illustration was created by Aleksi Briclot, a celebrated artist in the Magic: The Gathering community. Briclot’s design focuses on the gruesome, visceral aesthetics of the New Phyrexian faction, utilizing a color palette and form that emphasize the melding of bone and metal. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful and effective tool for graveyard-focused strategies, particularly in the Commander format, where the shifting power and toughness of the equipped creature can scale significantly as the game progresses.
