Where it came from
Cathartic Reunion was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Universes Beyond' collaboration with the Assassin's Creed franchise. This set was designed to integrate the iconic historical landscapes and characters of the Ubisoft video game series into the established mechanics of the card game, allowing players to utilize specific gear, historical figures, and narrative beats from the series in tabletop play.
The card features artwork commissioned to evoke the aesthetic language of the Assassin's Creed games, focusing on the cinematic storytelling associated with the franchise. As a reprint of a functional spell originally debuted in the Kaladesh set, this version serves as a thematic bridge, recontextualizing the mechanic of discarding cards to draw new ones through the lens of a character-driven moment within the Assassin's Creed lore.
