Cauldron Familiar

Cauldron Familiar was released in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering set Throne of Eldraine, a collection heavily inspired by European folklore and fairy tales. The card design draws upon the classic image of a witch’s cat, serving as a functional piece of the set’s 'Food' mechanic. Mechanically, it was engineered to interact with artifacts to recur itself from the graveyard, a design choice intended to create resilient, attrition-based gameplay that resonates with its eerie, self-sacrificing thematic identity.

The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a painterly style to emphasize the familiar’s uncanny connection to the bubbling cauldron. Upon its release, the card became a significant focal point in competitive play. Its ability to repeatedly drain an opponent's life total when paired with specific artifacts led to its widespread recognition as a staple in various deck archetypes, ultimately requiring balance adjustments by the game’s developers to maintain healthy play environments.
