Where it came from
The Feasting Troll King was released in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering set Throne of Eldraine, a collection heavily inspired by Arthurian legend and classic European folklore. Designed to embody the set's themes of food and fairy tale indulgence, the card mechanics center on the 'Food' token archetype introduced in this release, allowing the creature to return from the graveyard by sacrificing three of these tokens. This reflected the game designers' goal of creating high-synergy play patterns that leaned into the whimsical yet competitive tone of the Eldraine plane.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who emphasized the character's gluttonous nature through lush, detailed textures and a vibrant, earthy color palette. The artwork depicts the troll amidst a chaotic banquet, capturing the oversized, beastly anatomy consistent with traditional high-fantasy tropes. Upon its release, the card became a staple in graveyard-focused decks, earning recognition for its resilience and thematic cohesion with the set's unique mechanics.
