Provenance

Where it came from

Cave-In was originally released in the 1999 expansion Mercadian Masques, a set defined by its focus on resource management and the unique mechanics of the merchant-themed plane of Mercadia. Designed by the Magic: The Gathering development team during a period of experimentation with alternative casting costs, the card introduced the ability to pitch blue cards from one's hand to generate tempo, a design philosophy that would influence blue-aligned control decks for years to come.

The artwork for this card was created by artist Carl Critchlow, whose distinct, jagged aesthetic helped define the visual identity of the Masques block. Upon its release, the card was recognized for its utility in competitive formats, particularly for its capability to counter spells without the need for open mana. Over time, it has become a staple inclusion in The List, a curated selection of reprints that allows modern players to encounter impactful cards from the game's rich history.
