Where it came from
Celestial Purge was originally printed as a rare card in the 2009 Alara Reborn expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a flexible removal spell capable of exiling troublesome red or black permanents, it quickly became a staple in tournament sideboards, appreciated for its efficiency in addressing key threats in various Constructed formats. The card's design reflects the flavor of the Esper shard, where the pursuit of order and artificial perfection often manifests through the banishment of chaotic or corrupting elements.
This specific version, released as part of the 2010 Magic Player Rewards program, features new, alternate artwork by illustrator Greg Staples. Unlike the original card, which adhered to the specific aesthetic of the Alara block, Staples' interpretation emphasizes the ethereal and cleansing nature of the spell with a more dramatic, high-fantasy style. These promotional versions were distributed to active players who participated in sanctioned events, making them sought-after variants that blended utility with a more exclusive, premium visual presentation.
