Where it came from
Celestial Purge was originally printed in the Magic: The Gathering set Alara Reborn in 2009, serving as a versatile sideboard answer to permanents of specific colors. The Modern Masters 2015 version, released in May 2015, marked a return of the card to the competitive landscape within a curated reprint set designed to provide players with access to staples for the Modern format. The set was intended to offer a balanced draft experience while reintroducing powerful cards that had seen limited availability since their initial printings.
The artwork for this iteration was created by Kev Walker, a prolific illustrator known for his dynamic and dark aesthetic in the Magic art style. His depiction of the card focuses on the purging of malevolent, shadowy forces through a burst of divine energy, visually translating the card's function of exiling black or red permanents. Upon its release in the Modern Masters 2015 set, the card was well-received by players for its utility and the updated, clean art style that solidified its status as a staple for white-based control and midrange decks.
