Where it came from
The Celestus Sanctifier was released as part of the Innistrad: Double Feature set in 2022. This set was designed as a curated compilation, blending cards from the two preceding expansions, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and Innistrad: Crimson Vow. The overarching design aesthetic for the set utilized a monochromatic, silver-screen film noir treatment, applying high-contrast black-and-white filters to the original illustrations to evoke the gothic horror atmosphere of early cinema.
The card itself features artwork by Slawomir Maniak, who was tasked with capturing the essence of the Church of Avacyn's influence on the plane. The visual language of the set was intended to offer a stylistic departure from standard Magic: The Gathering card releases, focusing on texture and lighting rather than the vibrant colors typical of the game. Upon its release, the set was noted by collectors for its unique aesthetic, serving as an experimental tribute to classic horror film tropes.
