Where it came from
The Celestus Sanctifier was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the gothic horror-inspired plane of Innistrad, the card reflects the set’s thematic focus on the celestial alignment of the moon and the efforts of humans to hold back the encroaching supernatural darkness. It depicts a member of the Church of Avacyn tasked with maintaining the balance of the world through liturgical ritual.
The illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a stark, high-contrast palette to emphasize the mystical, glowing nature of the Celestus artifact. The card’s design—a creature that gains specific utility based on the day-night cycle mechanic—serves as a mechanical representation of the set's central tension between light and shadow. It was received by players as a solid utility piece within the white color identity for Limited play environments, praised for its thematic cohesion and functional role in stabilizing the board.
