Where it came from
Cemetery Protector was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Crimson Vow set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set focuses on the gothic horror themes of the plane of Innistrad, specifically centering on a vampire wedding. This card belongs to a cycle of 'cemetery' creatures designed to interact with the graveyard, a core mechanic that defines the dark, macabre atmosphere of this specific world.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the stoic, protective nature of the spirit within the horror aesthetic. The design team intended for the card to serve as a defensive utility piece, rewarding players for exiling cards from graveyards by generating tokens that match the exiled card's type. Upon its debut, players recognized it as a solid inclusion in white-aligned midrange decks, appreciated for both its flavor-rich artwork and its practical application in competitive play.
