Where it came from
Released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Crimson Vow, this double-faced card depicts the duality of the werewolf inhabitants of the gothic horror-inspired plane. The design is part of the set's exploration of the marriage between Olivia Voldaren and the vampire factions, with the Avabruck Caretaker representing the protective, communal aspect of the werewolf packs within the narrative framework of Innistrad.
The artwork, illustrated by Wisnu Tan, was crafted to emphasize the transformation mechanic inherent to the werewolf creature type. As a rare card, it was designed to function as a powerful late-game engine in the limited and commander formats, receiving positive reception among players for its ability to provide hexproof to other permanents, effectively securing a player's board state during night cycles.
