Where it came from
Cemetery Recruitment was released in July 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon set, the second expansion in the Shadows over Innistrad block for Magic: The Gathering. This card captures the gothic horror aesthetic that defines the plane of Innistrad, specifically focusing on the desperate, decaying atmosphere of a world being corrupted by cosmic influence. Mechanically, it serves as a recursive tool for black-aligned decks, reflecting the flavor of necromancy and the return of the dead in a setting dominated by madness and transformation.
The illustration for the card was created by artist Daarken, a frequent contributor to the franchise known for his moody, dark fantasy style. His work on this piece emphasizes the macabre nature of the set, depicting a grim scene of grave-tending that fits the bleak narrative of the Eldritch Moon expansion. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece in Limited formats, providing players with the card advantage necessary to maintain board presence during the extended, attrition-based games that characterized the Innistrad gameplay environment.
