Where it came from
Turn Aside was released in 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the gothic horror-inspired plane of Innistrad, the card reflects the set's narrative focus on the corruption of the world by the Eldrazi titan Emrakul. Mechanically, it serves as a specialized defensive tool, allowing players to redirect a spell targeting a permanent they control, fitting the set's emphasis on reactive play and cosmic dread.
The artwork for this card was created by Deruchenko Alexander. He employed a dark, muted palette and sharp, angular lines to evoke the unsettling atmosphere of the plane, depicting a moment of magical deflection that mirrors the card's function. Upon release, the card was received as a niche but effective sideboard option in various constructed formats, valued for its low mana cost and its ability to protect key assets during pivotal exchanges.
