Where it came from
Cephalid Inkmage was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Foundations set in 2024. The card represents a return to the cephalid creature type, a race of aquatic, telepathic beings originating from the plane of Otaria. As part of a core set designed for accessibility and evergreen play, the card serves to reinforce the thematic and mechanical identity of blue-aligned creatures in the game's broader history.
The art and design for the card focus on the traditional cephalid aesthetic, emphasizing their mysterious, scholarly nature and their reliance on ink-based magic. The design process for Foundations aimed to modernize classic creature types while providing players with utility-based effects. Upon its release, the card was received as a straightforward, functional inclusion for limited formats, appreciated by players for its ability to integrate into various spell-casting strategies.
