Where it came from
Cephalid Facetaker was introduced in the New Capenna Commander set, released in 2022 to complement the Streets of New Capenna expansion. The card depicts a member of the cephalid race, which has been a recurring aquatic species in Magic: The Gathering lore since the Odyssey block, reimagined here to fit the Art Deco-inspired, organized crime aesthetic of the city of New Capenna.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Bram Sels, who focused on the character's fluid, metamorphic nature and sharp, sophisticated attire to reflect the set’s noir theme. As a mechanical design, the card centers on the ability to copy other creatures, a hallmark of blue-aligned clone effects, which was received by players as a versatile utility tool for commander decks prioritizing creature-based board states.
