Where it came from
Chain Reaction is a hallmark red sorcery card in Magic: The Gathering, designed as a board-clearing mechanism that scales in damage based on the number of creatures currently on the battlefield. It was originally introduced in the Worldwake expansion and has since seen multiple reprints, including its inclusion in the Phyrexia: All Will Be One Commander set. The design concept focuses on the chaotic, escalating nature of combat, serving as a tactical reset for red decks that typically struggle with traditional mass removal.
The art for this iteration of the card reflects the aesthetic themes of the Phyrexian plane, emphasizing the visceral, industrial, and biomechanical horror characteristic of the set. Illustrators for the Phyrexia: All Will Be One release were tasked with integrating the card's mechanical function with the set's narrative of total conversion and assimilation. The card has been well-received by players for its efficiency in multiplayer formats like Commander, where it reliably functions as a high-impact answer to wide board states.
