Where it came from
Chain Reaction was originally printed in the Magic: The Gathering set Worldwake in 2010, designed as a high-impact red sorcery intended to capture the volatile, explosive nature of red magic. By dealing damage to every creature on the battlefield based on the total number of creatures present, it functions as a scaling board wipe that grows more devastating as a game progresses, reflecting the titular cascading effect.
The version from Commander 2021 features updated artwork that reinforces this theme of chaotic, widespread destruction. Commander 2021 was designed to expand the multiplayer format, focusing on dynamic card interactions that can shift the momentum of a game instantly. The card is widely utilized in red-inclusive decks for its ability to punish wide creature strategies, serving as a tactical reset button that keeps the battlefield state from becoming stagnant.
