Where it came from
The Champion's Helm was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Universes Beyond' collaboration with the Final Fantasy franchise. Designed to represent the iconic equipment found throughout the series, the card was integrated into the Commander product line, which focuses on social, multiplayer gameplay formats. The design team sought to capture the essence of a powerful, equipable relic that provides durability and protection, drawing visual and mechanical inspiration from the enduring theme of heroic armor found in the games.
The illustration work aims to reflect the high-fantasy aesthetic common to both the Final Fantasy universe and Magic: The Gathering. By utilizing a distinct visual language that highlights the item's sturdy and legendary appearance, the art direction intended to resonate with long-term fans of the source material. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its utility in gameplay, specifically for its ability to shield key creatures from removal effects while evoking the nostalgia of equipping ultimate gear in a JRPG.
