Where it came from
Chance Encounter was released as part of the Odyssey expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2001. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, this enchantment card was part of a broader set focused on the graveyard-based mechanics and themes of the Odyssey block, which shifted the game toward resource management involving the discard pile. The card serves as an alternate win condition, rewarding players who can successfully manage and manipulate the number of coins on the table.
The illustration was created by artist Christopher Moeller, who captured the chaotic, whimsical energy of the card's effect through his distinct painterly style. Within the game's competitive history, the card is frequently categorized as a 'build-around' piece, favored by players who enjoy unconventional or 'combo' deck strategies rather than standard combat-focused play styles. It has remained a niche but recognizable inclusion in the game’s vast library of cards known as The List.
