Heart Warden

Heart Warden was originally released in the Urza's Destiny expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 1999. As part of the Urza block, the card reflects the high-fantasy industrial aesthetic of the era, focusing on the mechanical and magical conflict between the artificer Urza and the Phyrexian invaders. Its inclusion in 'The List'—a curated selection of cards from Magic's history—highlights its role as a representative of the complex board state management and resource-based utility that defined late-nineties card design.

The card's art was created by D. Alexander Gregory, whose illustrative style during the late 1990s contributed to the distinct, somber visual language of the Urza cycle. The design aimed to capture the theme of defensive sacrifice, using mechanical motifs that were characteristic of the game's evolving focus on creature abilities over static power-and-toughness values. Upon its initial release, the card was viewed primarily as a functional utility piece for limited formats, though it remains a recognized example of the game's early efforts to integrate thematic world-building directly into mechanical gameplay.
