Where it came from
The Chandra, Pyromaster card released for the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con was part of a promotional set designed to celebrate the iconic red-aligned planeswalker. Featuring stylized, monochromatic artwork by Chase Stone, the card departed from traditional Magic: The Gathering aesthetic norms to offer a sleek, premium experience for attendees. This specific version was released in a limited-edition black matte box set that also included four other planeswalkers, marking a shift toward high-end, exclusive promotional content for major fan conventions.
The reception of the SDCC 2013 set was overwhelmingly positive, establishing a precedent for annual convention exclusives that remain highly sought after by collectors today. Chase Stone’s portrayal of Chandra Nalaar focused on dramatic lighting and minimalist color palettes, which allowed the character’s fiery nature to stand out against the dark, minimalist border design. By stripping away the standard frame elements, the design team aimed to elevate the cards into pieces of fine art, reinforcing the status of these promotional items as distinct cultural artifacts within the trading card game community.
