Where it came from
Released as an exclusive for the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, this promotional version of Ajani, Caller of the Pride was part of a special set of Planeswalker cards. The cards were designed by artist Aleksi Briclot, who rendered the characters in a distinctive, stylized black-and-white aesthetic with stark, singular color highlights. This specific set was created to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Magic: The Gathering, offering a premium aesthetic shift from the traditional full-color card art found in standard booster packs.
The reception of the set was highly positive among the enthusiast community, as it marked an early and significant foray into high-end, limited-release collectibles for the game. By choosing iconic characters like Ajani Goldmane and stripping away the typical color palette, Briclot emphasized the character's form and posture, providing a clean, sophisticated look that collectors quickly sought after. The card serves as a testament to the game's evolution into a collectible medium that prioritizes unique visual interpretations for its most dedicated fans.
