Chandra's Pyreling

Chandra's Pyreling was released in 2020 as part of the Core Set 2021, a collection designed to be accessible to newer players while featuring mechanical nods to long-standing Magic: The Gathering lore. This specific card serves as a thematic companion to Chandra Nalaar, the pyromancer planeswalker who acts as the central figure of this particular set. The card's inclusion was intended to support red-aligned aggressive strategies, specifically emphasizing the set's focus on dealing non-combat damage to trigger additional abilities.

The card's illustration was provided by artist Titus Lunter, who captured the elemental, volatile nature of a fire-based creature through warm, glowing tones and fluid, energetic linework. In the context of the game's design, Pyreling functions as a scaling threat that rewards players for tactical damage management. Upon its release, it was well-received by limited-format players for its utility as a reliable early-game play that remains relevant in the later stages of a match.
