Where it came from
Charging Griffin was released in 2015 as part of the Magic Origins expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to explore the origin stories of five iconic Planeswalkers, serving as a bridge between the core sets of the past and a new era of storytelling-focused development. The card itself occupies a traditional space in the game’s color pie as a white creature, reflecting the classic fantasy archetype of a regal, flying beast used by legions to maintain tactical control.
The artwork for this particular iteration was created by Johannes Voss, a prominent illustrator within the Magic: The Gathering community. Voss sought to emphasize the creature's swift, aggressive nature, employing a dynamic composition that captures the griffin mid-dive. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional staple for Limited play formats, where its combination of flying and low-cost stats provided players with a reliable, straightforward aerial threat that fit seamlessly into the set's aggressive white-aligned decks.
