Where it came from
The Charmed Griffin was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was notable for its distinct visual departure from the high-fantasy aesthetic of previous releases, focusing instead on a world of mercantilism, political intrigue, and bizarre creatures. The set introduced various mechanics centered around the Mercadian setting, a plane defined by its sprawling urban centers and market-driven culture.
The card features artwork by artist Donato Giancola, who was tasked with visualizing the creatures inhabiting the plane of Mercadia. Giancola's illustration depicts the griffin with a regal, almost ornamental quality, emphasizing the refined and somewhat artificial aesthetic that Wizards of the Coast sought to establish for the Mercadian Masques block. Upon its release, the card was generally viewed as a common-tier creature, primarily noted for its utility in limited play formats rather than high-level tournament strategies.
