Where it came from
Story Circle was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the flavor of the plane of Mercadia, a world defined by its complex social hierarchy and mercantilist culture. Mechanically, the card was designed as a white enchantment intended to provide players with a scalable defensive tool, allowing them to choose a color and mitigate damage from sources of that color.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Terese Nielsen. Nielsen’s aesthetic for this piece utilizes a fluid, ethereal style that aligns with the mystical themes of Mercadian Masques. Her design was intended to visually represent the protective, circular nature of the spell’s effect. Upon its release, the card was recognized for its utility in competitive play, particularly as a sideboard option against aggressive decks relying on single-color strategies.
