Provenance

Where it came from

Cheap Ass was released in 2004 as part of the Unhinged set, the third parody expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was intentionally crafted to subvert the traditional rules and mechanics of the game, embracing absurdity and meta-humor. This card in particular serves as a lighthearted commentary on the cost-effectiveness of certain game strategies, fitting perfectly into the set's theme of poking fun at the professional tournament environment.

The art and design were developed under the direction of the Wizards creative team, who leaned into a cartoonish, self-aware aesthetic to distinguish Unhinged from the game's more serious core sets. Upon its release, the card was received as a humorous curiosity by the player community. Because Unhinged cards were not legal for sanctioned tournament play, the design focus remained entirely on providing an entertaining experience for casual kitchen-table games rather than balancing competitive play.
