Where it came from
Cheatyface was released in 2004 as part of Unhinged, the second silver-bordered parody set produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the mechanics of the game through humor, subverting traditional rules and rewarding players for behavior that is typically forbidden, such as physical dexterity or illicit card placement.
The card was illustrated by Matt Cavotta, who designed the character to embody the literal spirit of cheating. The artwork depicts a mischievous, goblin-like creature scurrying away, perfectly matching the card's unique ability to be played from one's hand at any time by physically placing it onto the battlefield without paying its cost. Upon release, it became a cult favorite for its clever meta-commentary on the player experience and its ability to turn the act of surreptitious play into a core game mechanic.
