Where it came from
Chimil, the Inner Sun was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. It represents a central deity within the subterranean ecosystem of the plane of Ixalan, depicted as a massive, celestial entity residing at the core of the world. The card was designed to embody the themes of ancient power and cosmic discovery that define the set's focus on underground exploration and prehistoric civilizations.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Livia Prima, who rendered the inner sun as a glowing, geometric presence surrounded by intricate subterranean flora and structural elements. The design team intended for Chimil to serve as a high-impact, mythic rare artifact that influences the pace of gameplay by preventing opponents from countering spells and facilitating consistent card advantage, a reflection of the character's status as a foundational force within the lore of Ixalan.
