Where it came from
Chimil, the Inner Sun was released in 2023 as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a central entity within the Mesoamerican-inspired lore of Ixalan, specifically tied to the subterranean ecosystem of Orazca. Its design concept reflects the mythic nature of the plane's sun-based deities, utilizing a non-creature artifact frame to denote its status as an ancient, power-wielding force of celestial origin.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who focused on capturing the radiant and imposing scale of the deity. The artistic direction emphasizes glowing, ethereal light and intricate, angular patterns consistent with the Ixalan setting's aesthetic. Upon its introduction, the card was widely discussed by players for its ability to bypass counter-magic, cementing its place as a staple in high-mana Commander formats where control and value engines are prioritized.
