Where it came from
Chishiro, the Shattered Blade was released in 2022 as part of the Commander set for Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. The character represents the fusion of Kamigawa’s traditional, spirit-focused heritage with the cyberpunk aesthetic introduced in this set. Chishiro serves as the face commander for the 'Upgrades Unleashed' preconstructed deck, designed to showcase the mechanics of modifying creatures through equipment, auras, and +1/+1 counters.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering art community. Her design emphasizes the duality of the character, blending rugged, organic textures with the neon-infused tech of the setting. The card was well-received by players for its synergy-driven gameplay, which streamlined complex modification mechanics into an accessible and aggressive playstyle.
