Provenance

Where it came from

Chittering Rats was released in 2004 as part of the Darksteel expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in the metal-dominated plane of Mirrodin, the card reflects the dark, industrial, and artifact-heavy aesthetic that defined the block. It was designed as a common utility creature, providing a tactical disruption effect by forcing an opponent to put a card from their hand back on top of their library, a mechanic that emphasizes the persistent and bothersome nature of a swarm.

The artwork was illustrated by Dave Dorman, a renowned fantasy and sci-fi artist celebrated for his atmospheric and textured style. Dorman sought to capture the unsettling, scavenging nature of the rats within the metallic landscape of Mirrodin, using deep shadows and sharp contrasts to make the creatures appear integrated into the harsh environment. The card became a staple in the Pauper format, where its ability to manipulate an opponent's resources remains highly valued by players.
