Provenance

Where it came from

Chittering Rats was originally printed as a common card in the 2003 Magic: The Gathering set Legions. The card was designed to highlight the tribal mechanics of the set, which focused heavily on creature types, specifically rewarding players for deploying multiple copies of the same creature to manipulate the library. Its inclusion in the Hachette UK partwork series, which distributed Magic: The Gathering cards in magazines across the United Kingdom, provided a mass-market entry point for new players to acquire foundational gameplay staples.

The illustration by Ron Spencer captures the unsettling, swarm-like nature of the creature, a hallmark of his visceral and high-contrast style that defined much of the game’s aesthetic during the early 2000s. The design was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited formats, where the card’s ability to force an opponent to discard a card while simultaneously filling the battlefield made it a reliable choice for black-aligned decks.
