Lore

Why it matters

This card serves as a specialized tool for disrupting strategies that rely heavily on specific land types, turning an opponent's resources against them. As an uncommon entry from this set, it remains a notable example of how a single card can dictate the flow of a game by punishing particular deck compositions.

Provenance

Where it came from

Choke was originally released in the Tempest set in 1997, designed as a hosening card to penalize decks relying heavily on blue-aligned islands. Its inclusion in the Eighth Edition core set served to maintain this strategic counter-measure within the standard rotation, reflecting the game's ongoing commitment to color-pie balance where every color possesses specific tools to neutralize the strengths of others.

The artwork for the Eighth Edition printing was created by artist Brian Snaddens. The design process focused on visually manifesting the concept of suffocation or restriction, using imagery that evokes the paralysis of one's mana resources. Upon its release, it became a staple in sideboards for green decks, recognized for its effectiveness in turning a player's primary resource against them in a competitive environment.
