Where it came from
Choose Your Champion was released as part of the Archenemy Schemes set, a specialized collection of oversized cards designed for the Archenemy format in Magic: The Gathering. This format shifts the traditional player-versus-player dynamic into a one-versus-many experience, where the Archenemy utilizes a deck of powerful scheme cards to challenge a team of opponents. The card was crafted to introduce a sense of chaotic narrative tension to the game, drawing players into the high-stakes atmosphere of a structured villain encounter.
The design of the card emphasizes the cinematic, grand-scale aesthetic synonymous with the Archenemy expansion. The artwork was commissioned to capture the distinct, imposing visual language of Magic's multiversal antagonists. Upon release, the set was received as a creative departure from standard competitive play, lauded for its ability to transform casual game nights into thematic, cooperative boss battles, with this specific scheme card serving as a focal point for dramatic interaction.
