Where it came from
Cindervines was released in early 2019 as part of the Ravnica Allegiance set, specifically featuring as a promotional card. It represents the Gruul Clans, a guild within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse known for their chaotic, anti-civilization philosophy. The card was designed to function as an enchantment that punishes opponents for casting non-creature spells, reflecting the Gruul sentiment that complex magic and artificing are weaknesses to be dismantled by raw, elemental force.
The artwork for this particular version was created by Johannes Voss, whose work is highly regarded in the community for its emotive lighting and painterly style. Voss captured the essence of the card by depicting the wild, intrusive growth of nature reclaiming constructed structures, emphasizing the conflict between the manicured perfection of Ravnica’s city-plane and the untamed vitality of the wilderness. The promo version is distinguished by its unique set symbol and aesthetic finish, making it a sought-after piece for players who appreciate the visual narrative of the Gruul faction.
