Where it came from
The Priest of Forgotten Gods was introduced as part of the Ravnica Allegiance expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in early 2019. It was designed to support a sacrifice-themed archetype, reflecting the grim, ritualistic nature of the Orzhov Syndicate within the lore of the Ravnica plane. This specific promo version, bearing the collector number 83p, was distributed through promotional channels such as store events and bundled product releases.
The card’s visual identity was brought to life by artist Johannes Voss, who utilized a stark, high-contrast palette to emphasize the eerie aesthetic of the Orzhov priesthood. The design successfully balanced the card’s mechanical complexity—which requires a player to sacrifice two creatures for a significant board impact—with imagery that conveys the themes of power, morbidity, and religious devotion inherent to the set’s narrative.
