Where it came from
Circle of Affliction was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was unique for its 'alternate reality' theme, exploring how the game's mechanics and color pie might have shifted if history had unfolded differently. Within this context, the card was designed to provide black mana-aligned players with a defensive enchantment that mirrors the functionality of traditional white-aligned protection circles, reflecting the set's conceit of shifting iconic mechanics into new color territories.
The card was illustrated by Anthony S. Waters, a prolific artist for the game during the mid-2000s. Waters utilized a moody, atmospheric style to capture the somber nature of the effect, focusing on the visual representation of a lingering, parasitic magical tether. Upon its debut, the card was received as a fascinating curiosity by the player base, serving as a distinct example of the experimental design philosophy that defined the Planar Chaos era.
