Provenance

Where it came from

Circle of Protection: Green first appeared in Alpha, the inaugural set of Magic: The Gathering released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. It was designed as part of a cycle of enchantments intended to provide players with a targeted defense mechanism against specific colors of magic. This utility-focused design was created by Richard Garfield to introduce a strategic element of color-hating, where players could pay generic mana to prevent damage from sources of a designated color, thereby stabilizing the game board against aggressive mono-colored decks.

The artwork for the Sixth Edition printing was produced by Christopher Rush, one of the game's most iconic early contributors. In this iteration, Rush aimed for a clean, symbolic aesthetic that aligned with the standardized frame design introduced in 1999 to modernize the card's visual identity. While the Circle of Protection cards were fundamental to early competitive play and sideboards, they eventually transitioned into legacy staples as the game evolved, eventually being phased out of core sets in later years in favor of more proactive defensive mechanics.
