Where it came from
The Ekundu Griffin was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Classic Sixth Edition set, which debuted in 1999. As a core set, Sixth Edition was designed to curate a foundational experience for players, reprinting iconic cards from the game's earliest years while introducing the most significant rules overhaul in the history of the franchise, known as the 'Sixth Edition Rules,' which streamlined combat and stack interactions.
The artwork for this particular Griffin was illustrated by Anson Maddocks, one of the original core artists who defined the visual aesthetic of early Magic. Maddocks was known for his distinct, organic style that leaned into high fantasy tropes, and his depiction of the Ekundu Griffin sought to capture the regal yet ferocious nature of the creature, fitting the Red color identity that emphasized impulsive, aggressive aerial threats during that era of card design.
