Circle of Protection: White

Circle of Protection: White first appeared in the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a foundational enchantment for the White color identity in Magic: The Gathering. The card was intended to provide players with a strategic defensive tool, allowing them to mitigate damage from White sources at a low mana cost. Its design philosophy centered on the color wheel's principle of symmetrical protection, establishing a cycle that would persist across nearly every core set for over a decade.

The Eighth Edition printing, released in 2003, marked a significant aesthetic shift for the game as it introduced the modern card frame. The illustration by Mark Poole, which had graced the card since its inception, was preserved for this version. By this stage in the game's history, the card was widely recognized by veteran players as a staple of limited and casual play environments, serving as a quintessential example of early Magic design language that balanced utility with thematic consistency.
