Provenance

Where it came from

Circling Vultures was released in 1997 as part of the Weatherlight set, the final installment of the Mirage block in Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed during an era of the game where graveyard synergy was becoming a central mechanical focus, reflecting the set's narrative arc which follows the crew of the skyship Weatherlight as they travel to the plane of Rath. The card's ability to grow in power based on the number of creature cards in a graveyard served as an early iteration of mechanics that would later become staples of black-aligned graveyard-matters strategies.

The artwork was provided by Una Fricker, a prolific contributor to the game during the mid-to-late 1990s. Fricker’s design sought to evoke a sense of desolate scavenging, utilizing a stark, earthy color palette to illustrate the avian theme. At the time of its release, the card was generally viewed as a niche utility creature, praised more for its thematic resonance with the dark aesthetic of the Weatherlight story than for competitive dominance.
