Where it came from
Circu, Dimir Lobotomist was originally released in the 2006 Ravnica: City of Guilds expansion. Designed as a legendary creature representing the secretive Dimir guild, the card mechanic allows players to exile cards from an opponent's library, reflecting the guild's theme of psychological surveillance and information theft. This specific version appeared in the 2018 GRN Guild Kit, a product designed to celebrate the return to the plane of Ravnica by providing ready-to-play decks themed around each of the ten guilds.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Zoltan Boros and Gabor Szikszai, who were tasked with capturing the essence of a Dimir mage. They aimed for a menacing, shadowy aesthetic that emphasized the character's role as a silent, lethal agent of the guild. Upon release, the design was noted for its unique interaction with the library-exile mechanic, making it a distinct, if niche, choice for commander players who enjoy control-oriented and disruptive gameplay strategies.
