Where it came from
Citanul Hierophants was released in 1998 as part of the Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a central set in the Urza block, it introduced the mechanic of mana-producing artifacts and reflected the high-fantasy industrial themes of the narrative, which focused on the artificer Urza's preparations against the Phyrexian invasion. The card belongs to a cycle of creatures capable of turning other permanents into mana sources, emphasizing the set's focus on resource acceleration.
The artwork was illustrated by veteran fantasy artist Heather Hudson. Her design captures a druidic figure integrated with the organic, twisted aesthetic of the Citanul region within the game's lore. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece in green decks, praised for its ability to supplement traditional land-based mana production, and it remains a recognizable example of the distinctive art style prevalent during the late nineties period of the game's development.
