Provenance

Where it came from

City in a Bottle was released in 1993 as part of Arabian Nights, the first expansion set for the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Richard Garfield, the set drew heavily from the themes and folklore of One Thousand and One Nights. The card functions as a powerful, albeit highly specific, board-clearing effect, intended to neutralize other cards originating from the Arabian Nights expansion by exiling them from the game.

The artwork was provided by Drew Tucker, a foundational artist for the early game whose distinct, impressionistic watercolor style set a unique visual tone for the set. Tucker’s interpretation of the card’s title—a swirling, ethereal vessel—evokes the mystical nature of the setting. While the card is functionally narrow, it remains a notable piece of Magic history for its role in early competitive sideboards and its representation of the game's initial experimental design phase.
